About Juliana Hopkins MBACP (Snr.Accred)
An intelligent, positive and warm person who works with a great deal of integrity.
I work with couples and individuals.
A highly experienced counsellor/psychotherapist dedicated to finding the best ways of working to be most helpful to clients.
I am a BACP Senior Accredited Supervisor.
I work in Yelverton in a large, light and airy room (see photo above). I also work in Plymouth on Tuesday evenings at the Waterloo Wellbeing Centre: http://www.psychotherapyplymouth.co.uk. I sometimes work from Tavyside Health Centre in Tavistock.
Humanistic/Person Centred orientation as well as trained in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).
Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
I see myself primarily working from a Person-Centred Approach. I have training and experience within primary care working as a Cognitive and Behavioural Counsellor, which I integrate into my work. I use ideas, techniques and skills from many approaches if it feels to be the right thing at the right time with the right person.
I am developing a fierce interest in philosophy after having worked alongside many people asking themselves “What is life and how shall I live mine ?”.
I see counselling as something that offers safety in exploring your own experience in a confidential environment. I liken it to being on a journey. You may find you need to stop and look at the map for some reason. Perhaps you are lost, or don’t like the road you have been on. Maybe you wonder what other roads are out there. It might be that the ride has been very bumpy or traumatic even. Counselling offers you a chance to stop, look at the map and have time to yourself to help with the next step.
"If we do not change the direction we are going, we are likely to end up where we are headed."
- Chinese proverb.
In this time I don’t tell you where to go nor do I judge your progress. It can be very helpful having someone looking at the map with you. If I point to what I see on the map, this may enhance your view.
When working with couples two people in relationship – whether they be in a partnership, a marriage or members of a family together or a close friendship – wish to look at themselves and their relationship with each other.
"Take heart: marriage is more elegant than we dare believe. It can bring you bliss, but it’s harder than many people recognize."
David Schnarch
All relationships hit bumpy roads. To borrow from a song …“There will be trouble ahead”. If there wasn’t trouble it would not be a normal relationship. Sometimes it is more than trouble, where relationships undergo more serious blocks, failures and ruptures. My aim as a counsellor is to facilitate:-
Communication
Listening
Understanding
Empathy
With these four components, and time and space, what is happening in the relationship becomes clearer. This fosters the chances of finding the right solution for the individuals within the relationship. This may or may not be to stay together.
I also work as a supervisor. I have a diploma in Person-Centred Supervision.
My experience includes :-
Working with counsellors-in-training while completing their placements at GP surgeries.
Supervising counsellors and professionals working at organisations such as Broadreach and The Zone, (Plymouth).
I am the Supervisor for the Haye Mill counselling service in Callington.
I am one of the Supervisors for Counsellors Southwest CIC
“When I am prized, I blossom and expand; I am an interesting individual”
Carl Rogers
As a Person-Centred supervisor, my focus is on you as a person. I can be client-centred and also form-orientated, but only in response to how you would like to work. My focus is on you rather than your theoretical orientation or your clients. I aim to accompany you while you explore your work in an environment of trust, confidentiality, safety and good humour. I believe professional growth, confidence and joy can be fostered from being fully encountered by a supervisor with whom you relate profoundly.
I started my counselling training in 1998. Before that I was a primary school teacher working in Plymouth and Bere Alston. While I loved many aspects of my teaching career, I also felt that it was not something I wanted to do forever. I started the counselling training while I was teaching and knew instantly that I had found my vocation.
Before teaching I lived in France from 1988 to 1997. During this time I held various positions as a bilingual secretary for festivals and conferences that take place in Cannes; I taught English as a foreign language ; I also cooked on classic sailing yachts, research vessels and cargo ships around Europe, as well as across the Atlantic to the Caribbean.
Most of my time these days is spent with my passions – my children, Yoga, close friends, walking the dogs, reading and counselling.
