My training, work experience and any achievement

How Can I Help?

Are you finding life difficult or stressful, struggling to cope? Are you feeling unhappy, anxious, mixed up or stuck? It can be really hard to deal with stressful and traumatic life events alone. Maybe you are not even sure what is troubling you or what you need. You feel things need to change but it’s hard to know where to begin.

Talking to a counsellor can be a good way of offloading or releasing long-held emotions. It can also be helpful in weighing up options and choices. You may have nobody to talk with, or maybe your usual way of dealing with issues is to ignore them and to try to get on with life. Sometimes though, maybe due to a gradual build-up or a sudden life event, it can be a struggle to keep control of emotions, or to understand them. Talking about them in counselling can be a good way of coming to terms with them.

Counselling is a therapeutic relationship between myself, a qualified counsellor, and you, the client. It is a professional relationship. In difficult circumstances, family members and friends are often unable to provide an objective point of view. Counselling offers a non-judgemental perspective, enabling you to gain insights and strategies to assist in understanding thoughts and emotions and thereby feeling more empowered to manage your particular situation. The counsellor and client play an equal role in the counselling process. There is no ’expert’ in a counselling relationship. My intention is to make the counselling process both safe and supportive.

What is Person-Centred Counselling?

I am trained in Person-centred counselling. Person-centred counselling is a Humanistic therapy developed by Carl Rogers. He believed that given the right environment people will always have the capacity to change in a positive way and move towards being a more complete person who will fulfil more of their potential. The counsellor’s role is to create the right conditions for growth. This is achieved by careful listening, understanding, a capacity for genuine contact and a non-judgemental environment. This working relationship underpins the therapy.

What can counselling achieve?

Counselling can be beneficial for a wide range of psychological issues and it is increasingly used as a way of enhancing personal development, where a person is not in crisis, but may be aware that they are experiencing difficulties with certain areas of their life.

Sessions are normally weekly to begin with and we can have an informal initial meeting so that you can decide if counselling is right for you. You do not need a Doctor’s referral - just get in contact directly to make an arrangement for an initial appointment.

I own and work for Shropshire Counselling & Coaching which is in Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury, close to the town centre. There is a dedicated, private counselling room to ensure your privacy and confidentiality is respected.

How can Coaching Benefit you?

My coaching is based on NLP (I am a qualified practitioner).
Whilst Counselling tends to explore the past and the present, Coaching looks to the future, rather than seeking to resolve any pain and emotional issues from the past. Coaching focuses on how to deal with the future and tends to focus on more short-term, quicker change. At some points in our lives we may feel ‘stuck’, our lives are not progressing and we are left with the same routines and treading water. Coaching focuses on personal development, on an individual’s growth and positive change. As your coach I can help you to make changes faster and more effectively than would be possible on your own. A coach can help you to clarify how you think and feel and make choices about the future that will allow you to embrace change and maximise your performance.
‘The quality of life is directly related to the level of uncertainty you can comfortably tolerate’ Anthony Robbins
Coaching can encourage and motivate you to take responsibility for setting new goals in your life in order to attain the results you desire. Sessions involve planning, action, feedback and reflection. Coaching is a way of helping people to learn, rather than teaching them. I can support and encourage you to take positive action to change aspects of your life for the better.

Training, qualifications & experience
I am qualified as a Person-Centred Counsellor to Masters level. This is the highest level of practitioner qualification. I also have a level 3 certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and hold an Open University qualification in Psychology.

I am a Registered Member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and work to their Code of Ethics. For my NLP and Coaching I am a member of the ANLP.

I update my knowledge and skills with regular courses as part of my continuing professional development.

I have a wide range of experience of clients’ presenting issues, and have worked with a spectrum of age groups: teenagers to those in their eighties. I have previously worked as a counsellor in GP surgeries where I saw patients with many different kinds of problems. I am engaged in voluntary work with Age UK and I have experience of working with the deaf using a sign language interpreter.

My background

I was employed as a Civil Servant for many years and in many roles. I have experience of management, and coaching within that setting and worked extensively with the elderly, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.

I also have experience as a volunteer for a mental health charity. My particular interest and expertise is in counselling those with Asperger’s, low self-esteem and those who suffer domestic abuse and violence.
