About Adrian Francis Counselling
I am a qualified humanistic counsellor, governed by the BACP code of ethics. I specialise in counselling for the deaf and hearing-impaired (using BSL if required), bereavement, anxiety, stress, childhood trauma and past issues. Of course I have experience in many other fields, so please contact me or visit my website http://www.afranciscounselling.co.uk and book your free consultation.
After struggling for many years with my own personal issues, I tried to seek help regarding the traumatic experiences I had endured whilst at a boarding school for deaf children. I felt isolated from my family and, after leaving school, felt excluded from the hearing world.
I tried to find a deaf counsellor, but I couldn’t find one in the south of England and the cost of travel was too prohibitive. Eventually I received the help that I needed, and was so impressed by the changes that counselling helped me to achieve, that I wanted to be able to help other people in the same way.
Previously, I had run some drop-in clinics for Adult Social Services Sensory Team, which assisted clients with hearing loss in East Hampshire. This experience convinced me that many people needed help to come to terms with their hearing loss and deafness; not just equipment to help them hear the door bell ringing. People needed someone to listen to their problems and to provide specialist support and communication strategies to help them deal with their hearing loss.
Now I am a qualified counsellor, I have experience of dealing with many issues as well as deafness. Subjects include: bereavement, anxiety, depression, sexuality, anger management, sexual assault and childhood trauma, etc. The majority of my clients are not deaf and they tell me, I am pleased to say, that I speak very well!
Prior to setting up my private practice, I provided counselling for Life Changes (Southampton), The Rowans Hospice (Waterlooville), Peter Symonds College (Winchester), and IAPT Services (Portsmouth). I still continue to do voluntary work, and try to raise awareness of the problems that deaf people face in the community, and when trying to access counselling and psychological therapies. To this end, I will be running Deaf Awareness Workshops in the near future.
I use the Humanistic counselling model which respects the client and supports them to achieve their full potential in a non-judgemental way.
I can work with you to enable you to identify and process presenting issues, which will help you to overcome these problems and move on. All clients are unique, and so after the initial consultation I will establish which therapeutic approach will be most beneficial to support you with your journey. For example, a Person-Centred Approach, Transactional Analysis (TA), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Creative Therapy (art, modelling etc.)
I am also a fully qualified to carry out Swedish massage, Indian head massage, reflexology and reiki.
