What to Do When You’re Running out of Willpower

Lisa Franchi February 09, 2015

We all make decisions and choices every day. But sometimes, they get overwhelming that we often find ourselves falling short of the energy and determination to do so. Whether it is about pursuing a dream or cutting back on a bad habit, willpower is a finite resource that we need to keep moving. Whilst we can replenish our stock of willpower, there will come a time when we will almost lose it.

And in moments like this, what should we do?

Meditate.

Our stress levels affect our inner strength and ability to make decisions. When the body is stressed, so is the mind. Meditation can be a quickest and easiest way to replenish your willpower, revitalise your tired mind, and reenergise your body. Practising mindfulness meditation is a great means of calming the body and mind at times when willpower seems to be out of reach.

Always consider the long-term benefits.

A lot of times, we fail to break a habit because we only focus on the discomfort we feel at the very moment. For instance, smokers trying to quit easily slip because they only think about how to stop the cravings, and forget about the very purpose of their quitting. Some people, when told about how a business model might fail will be discouraged and stop pursuing it, just because they only cling to the possibility of it failing. When the determination and motivation to purse something seems to be out of sight, always think about your purpose or goal of why you even made that decision in the first place. So if you are cutting your calorie intake and you find yourself choosing between an apple and a donut, think of why you actually decided to cut weight. Doing this is a great way to replenish your willpower.

Deal with the tough things first.

Since our daily dose of willpower is limited, experts suggest that we concentrate on bigger decisions first down the little ones. For instance, if you are working on a big project, do it first thing in the morning when your mind is still fresh and your body strong, than at night when you are physically and mentally drained.

Take a nap.

Can’t decide whether to take that project or not? Take a nap first. If you want to keep your willpower in the right level, taking enough Z’s is something you should give more importance. If you find yourself experiencing the midday slump, then turn off your laptop, get yourself a nice, soft pillow and take snooze. You will be in a better position to make a decision when you wake up, guaranteed.

Allow yourself to indulge sometimes.

Just because you are trying to lose weight doesn’t mean you should give up all your favourite treats and sweets. Studies show that dieters who allow themselves to indulge a little lost more weight than those who completely restricted themselves. Going for a ‘cheat day’ is not bad, and in fact really works! Just remember to keep your portions reasonable.

Keep using it.

Just like the muscles in our body, our willpower increase and get stronger the more we use them. Over time, you will realise that you will only need little willpower to keep a bad habit away or stay focused on a goal. Push yourself a little bit each day by indulging in activities that require you to think harder. Whilst they may sap your energy in the short-term, they could lead you to better outcomes in the long run.

No one has ever succeed in their undertakings without having to experience a drought in willpower. So if you find yourself running out of it, don’t feel bad. Instead, give yourself time and space to breathe, and then consider these helpful tips. You will get there. Just don’t give up.
