What to Do When Your Body is Stressing You Out
It’s true – we are our own worst critics. We all have those moments when one glimpse at the mirror spikes up our stress levels. The ‘too good to be true’ concept of beauty, as portrayed by the media, leaves many people hating their own bodies. And from those tiny wrinkles and curves, we get to bash our qualities as a whole, even our personal values.
It’s okay and normal to somehow feel insecure about some parts of your body. No one is perfect. Even those who have been rated as “most beautiful” people in the world have their own sets of insecurities. But we must not get to the point that our negative self-thoughts are already sinking down our self-esteem, and affecting how we view ourselves as a whole.
So whenever the way you look is stressing you out, here are some things you can do. By practising these tips regularly, you don’t just lessen the stress you feel, you will also learn to accept, love and nurture your body more.
Begin with deep, mindful breathing. When you are stressed, you tend to have shallow breathing. And when you do, you just become more stressed. Yes, these two go hand in hand. Take several long, deep breaths to calm your body and prevent those negative thoughts from doubling.
Look at others you admire the most. Create a list of people you admire – people who have contributed to your life, to the community or the whole world. Think of those people who have given you inspiration. Then, consider whether their appearance was important to their success and accomplishments.
Count your blessings, not your blemishes. Think back to a time in your life when you felt good about your body. Tell yourself you can feel like that again, even in this body at this again.
Get moving. Physical activity doesn’t only enhance your shape; it also improves your mood and eases anxiety. Find a method of exercise that you enjoy and do it regularly. Don’t exercise for the sole purpose of losing weight. Do it because you want to feel better and become healthier. This way, you won’t feel pressured of obtaining results fast. After all, weight loss is simply a side benefit of exercise. Its main benefit is keeping your body strong and healthy.
Create. Indulge in activities you enjoy and make you feel inspired. They can serve as a positive distraction. They make you realise that you are more than just a body, but a whole human being who creates things.
Be your body’s best friend and supporter, not its enemy. No one can love and take good care of your body more than you can. So instead of hating it, learn to accept your body. It’s a gift, after all. Don’t just look at the physical qualities. Rather, give more attention to your inner qualities, strengths, skills and core values.
Hating your body makes you feel hopeless, and unworthy of being appreciated. You might feel stuck in negative thoughts and feelings as you look at yourself in the mirror. And it may feel like there’s no getting out. But you can reduce the stress you feel, and ultimately feel better by doing the above tips.
