What Research Tells Us about Success
When they think of success, most people would visualise themselves living in a mansion, driving a luxury car, or getting promoted in their job. But a growing body of research suggests otherwise. Here are some interesting facts that science has uncovered about success.
Success does not create happiness.
Many people think that success is the key to happiness. But the truth is – it’s the other way around. In fact, success is not measured with how beautiful your house is, how many cars you have, or how much money you’ve got in the bank. True, lasting success stems from what is going on inside of you. It is the positive thoughts inside your head that pushes you to pursue your goals.
Failure is necessary to understand success.
Jerker Denrell, associate professor of organizational behaviour at Stanford School of Business, suggests that studying successes without also looking at failures tends to create a misleading, if not totally wrong picture of what it takes to succeed. Failures are not merely stumbling blocks. Rather, they are opportunities for learning.
Anyone can be successful.
Some people think that they can’t be successful because they don’t have the resources to. But the truth is that anybody can be successful. It is simply a matter of wanting to, then doing what it takes to achieve your goals.
You are responsible for your success.
The extent of your success depends specifically on how much you want to succeed and on how broad or narrow you define it. The measure of success depends on how clearly you picture what you want; appreciate why you want it, and what you are willing to do to achieve it. It is not enough that we aim for success. We should have a clear vision of it. Then, you also need a strong, driving force to energise your passion to achieve it. Your passion is going to help you overcome the challenges that come along your way to success.
Emotional intelligence spurs success.
A 2006 study by Accenture High Performance suggests that even though intelligence is important for career success, interpersonal competence, self-awareness and social awareness – all elements of emotional intelligence – are better predictors of who will succeed and who won’t. It is also the strongest predictor for job performance, according to a research published in the Journal of Organizational Behaviour.
Success is not everything.
You cannot find fulfilment in life solely from success. If your focus is to primarily achieve success in one area of your life, and you don’t give importance with your social relationship, you are less likely to find fulfilment. That’s because in the innermost part of you is someone who seeks to love and be loved unconditionally. Unless they are met, you can’t be truly happy in life even though you have already achieved the success you have worked so hard for.
Lasting success stems from what is going on inside of you. It reflects your true passion. And in order to succeed, you should have a clear vision of it, a clear reason why you want it and how you are going to achieve it. Furthermore, the extent of your success depends on how much you want to succeed – the efforts you give and the work you do.
