What It Really Feels Like to Have Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety disorder is one of the most common mental health problems these days. While it is normal to feel anxious from time to time, anxiety disorder is a serious condition that can significantly affect a person’s quality of life. It’s more than feeling worried. It brings along other unwanted emotions that cause great stress to the person.
But still, some people tend to undermine this condition. They would think that people with anxiety issues are just being silly and they can simply knock it off.
So what exactly is going through the mind of people with anxiety disorder? These are some facts that most of us aren’t aware of.
It can be hard for them to decide.
People with anxiety problems often have a hard time making decisions on their own. Whether it’s as simple as what to order at a restaurant for dinner or what career to pursue after college - the presence of anxiety disorder can feel so paralyzing, as if one doesn’t have a choice. This is the reason why people with anxiety disorder can’t easily do things that even if difficult, are still doable for people without the condition.
Anxiety sufferers feel like they are a failure.
Not being able to do even simple stuff on their own and not being able to decide even for the most simplest of situations is enough to make one feel like a failure. And this happens among sufferers of anxiety disorder. This is why they would often seem pessimist and hopeless. It’s not that they are choosing to be one. It’s just that it feels like it’s the reality for them.
They don’t like worrying.
It’s easy to advice people with anxiety disorder to just quit worrying and they will be fine. For these people, they believe that they are worrying about is a legitimate thing.
It doesn’t mean they are weak.
Until we put ourselves in the shoes of the people with anxiety disorders, we may feel like they are just making life more difficult than it needs to be. People with anxiety disorder are actually coping with a lot of emotional and physical challenges more than the average person. And it really takes courage to go through all these and try to recover from the disorder.
It takes time to recover from the disorder.
If your friend or family member has anxiety disorder, you have to be patient. It takes time to fully recover from this condition. Treatment takes a minimum of 12 weeks. But more severe cases may take longer time.
Anxiety disorder affects even their social life.
Don’t think that your friend or loved one doesn’t want to see you anymore or hang out with you and the rest of your social circle. It’s not you. It’s just that anxiety affects a person’s social life too. Many people with this condition will choose to isolate themselves because being in a crowd could trigger feelings of being ‘not in control’.
Anxiety disorder is real. If you or someone you know who has this condition, it is best to seek professional help. Support from family and friends is equally important too.
