Amy Taylor December 29, 2011

Few more days to go and its 2012! You must be all curious about the latest in next year’s fashion line. What colours would be ‘in’ and what type of clothes will be favoured by the world’s top designers? But other than these, you may also want to take a peek on the fashionable fruits and vegetables this coming year!

Next year, we will be seeing more of the unusual fruits. Most probably, you haven’t tasted them yet or you did, but only for a few times.

So what are the ‘in’ fruits and veggies for 2012? Expect to see the following in your local market:

      1.     White Strawberries / Pineberries

Get your fruit basket and fill it with juicy, refreshing, and naturally delicious strawberries! Experts believe that 2012 will be a year for strawberries. This very unusual fruit tastes like the tropical pineapple but its colour is white. It’s literally the opposite of the common strawberry because aside from its white skin, it has seeds that are colour red! At first they are green. But as these strawberries ripen, they become paler and paler until they turn white. Local vendors started selling white strawberries or pineberries last year but this coming year, more gardeners will become interested on growing this crop as the market for it will boom. Around 3,000 pineberry plants have been sent to various garden centres to promote its cultivation.

2.       Purple Majesty Potatoes

This oddly-coloured potato tastes just the same with white potatoes but studies suggest that it can be healthier. It has been proven also to reduce blood pressure. In a US study, it was found that purple potatoes are as effective as porridge oats in lowering one’s blood pressure. The UK market has produced purple majesty potatoes last year but only in small amounts. Well, this 2012, it will soon hit the marketplace and restaurants! In addition, potatoes are rich in anthocyanin which is a type of antioxidant that is said to aid in treating diabetes, aging, and inflammation. The colour of these ‘unusual’ potatoes is due to the compound that is similar with those that are found in red cabbage, blackberries, blackcurrants, and blueberries.

3.       Turbo’ Melons and Tomatoes

Heavy, bigger, and tastier melons and tomatoes will also become stars in 2012! They are grafted crops which have larger roots. And as they grow, these plants will produce bigger crops too! Turbo melons and tomatoes are also said to have higher resistance against pets such as whitefly.

Aside from being fashionable with your home, clothes, and gadgets, you also want to be healthy this coming 2012. These unusual fruits and vegetables aren’t just fashionable. Science has proven that they’re good for your body too!
