Top Reasons Why You Should Quit Sleeping Pills Today

Rebecca Lewis August 02, 2016

Quality sleep - we all dream about it. In the ideal world, after a long hard day at work, we can easily drift into a deep slumber and give our mind and body time to rest and rejuvenate. But again, that’s in the ideal world. The reality is that majority of workers suffer from sleep problems, ranging from insomnia to snoring, sleep apnoea, and a lot more. In 2011, 30 per cent of British workers report that they are severely sleep deprived, making them at a higher risk of mental health and relationship issues.

Getting quality sleep is indeed one of the biggest health challenges these days. And sometimes, popping a pill is the only way to deal with your sleep problems.

While sleeping aids seem to provide a quick fix, there are more reasons not to rely on them. Here they are:

They can have serious side effects.

Any medication can have mild to serious side effects to your body. Sleep aids, in general, can put a huge toll on your body organs over time. From tingling of arms, legs and feet to loss in appetite and dependency, sleep aids can cause serious health effects.

They can be addictive.

As mentioned, your body can develop dependence to the drug. One of the biggest concerns among people who use sleep aids is that it becomes difficult for them to break the habit. If you become heavily dependent on it, it can be so much difficult to quit.

Sleep aids can cause ‘rebound insomnia’.

Many people take prescription drugs to deal with insomnia. But what if the medication you are taking is actually causing you the problem or making it worse? Abruptly discontinuing sleep aid can cause rebound insomnia. This means that you start to experience the condition again after you quit the medication.

They don’t cure the cause, only relieve the symptoms.

Unfortunately, sleep aids don’t cure the cause of your sleep problems. They are simply masking the underlying condition that leads to sleep problems.

They can interfere with your sex life.

Sleep aids contain chemicals that often work against melatonin - the hormone which promotes sleep. Such imbalance can lead to other serious health symptoms and could even worsen your sleep problems.

Research shows they may be more dangerous than you think.

A 2014 study carried out by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that these prescription medications may be more dangerous than you think. According to the study, sleep aids can hit women more than men because women tend to metabolise sleep aids at a slower pace.

Natural Alternatives for Sleep Aids

The good news is there are natural approaches to address various sleep concerns. Among the most popular are the use of herbal treatments, relaxation techniques, exercise, meditation, yoga and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). This form of treatment is effective specifically because it seeks to modify the dysfunctional or destructive thoughts, emotions and patterns of behaviour that lead to sleep disorders.
