You’ve been working really hard all this time. Your rarely used your vacation credits. You spend three times per week on average doing overtime work. You feel really exhausted. But you can’t just stop. You are workaholic.

You have to remind yourself that you are not a robot. Your body gets tired, so as your mind. But you don’t have to quit your job or change career. Sometimes, all you need to keep going is some time off.

Below are some of the major reasons why you need a mental health break:

You become more productive once you get back.

Mental health breaks take you back to the right perspective. They are like oxygen that refuels your mind and keeps you energised. Research has shown that taking regular breaks from mental tasks improves productivity and creativity.

You get to enjoy quality sleep.

It is hard to fall asleep when you are dead tired - physically and mentally. People who are chronically stressed tend to have sleeping problems. So if you want to make your night time sleep a more enjoyable one, prioritise rest. According to a study published in the journal Sleep, the ideal workday would start at 10 a.m. A great way to stay rested during a busy day is to take a few minutes of power nap. It makes you more alert, productive and feeling better for the rest of the day.

You can do more.

You know the saying ‘less is more’? When your mind has properly rested, it is capable of handling tasks in an effective and time-efficient manner. Remember those days when you have poured so many hours in one project but couldn’t get the result you want? Maybe because your mind was so tired you can’t think of a better and creative solution. So the next time you tackle a difficult project, consider taking some time off first. You might be surprised of how the ideas and inspiration can come in naturally.

You develop positive thinking.

It’s hard to think positively when you are stressed. By taking regular breaks from work, you also allow your body to recuperate from stress. As a result, your mood improves and your perspective brightens up. Positive thinking makes you resilient. It gives you an advantage against life’s difficulties.

So don’t every feel guilty whenever you are taking a mental health break. You need it. You deserve it. Whether it’s traveling, staying at home with your pets, visiting a friend, or participating in a community event - taking time off from your daily responsibilities give you the opportunity to recharge your batteries. And feel super awesome the next day.
