Top 10 Ridiculous Excuses: Why Many People Don’t Exercise

Lisa Franchi November 16, 2012

You don’t need to buy ineffective weight loss products or sign up for expensive weight loss programs just to achieve your dream body figure. You just have to sweat it out! Not only will you lose fat when you exercise, but you will also reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. But despite the numerous health benefits of exercising, research shows that only a small number of people make it a regular habit.

Many people have different reasons not to exercise. Here are the most common excuses:

1.  I don’t have time!

Every one of us, regardless of age, gender, nationality and status in life is given the same amount of time with others. But on how you spend it, it mainly depends on you. How come most of the busiest people are able to give time exercising? There are workout programs that are designed for busy individuals, such as the HIIT (high-intensity interval training). This form of exercise can be done for just three times a week at 10-20 minutes per session. Study shows that just 20 minutes of HIIT is equivalent to 2.5 hours of walking!

2.  My back hurts

Most probably, the reason why your back aches is because you lack exercise! You have to start building the strength in your back and core. This will improve your balance and coordination, lower your risk of osteoporosis and ultimately relieve your back pain.

3.  I don’t like bumps on my arms and legs.

Most women are afraid to do weightlifting because they think it’s going to make them look like men, physically. Not true! Most women who exercise don’t build huge muscle mass like men do. Why? It’s because women, by nature, do not produce large amounts of testosterone that is needed to build large muscle mass. Female bodybuilders still take steroids to get their masculine physique.

4.  I’m too fat to do it!

Eating smaller portions of food is not enough to lose weight. There are low-impact exercises such as weight training and yoga that will not put so much strain in your body while you shed some pounds. If you’re fat, chances are you have weak muscles. By exercising, you are strengthening your muscles so they burn fat even when you’re asleep!

5.  I don’t have enough resources to get started

You don’t have to buy a new pair of expensive trainers (your old running shoes are enough) and exercise gears to get started. You can just wear an old t-shirt and joggers. After all, you’re just going to sweat on them! While exercising machines like treadmills and stationary bikes are good investments, you don’t have to buy them when you don’t have enough funds. There are exercises that do not require any equipment but are very effective!

6.  I’m too tired to workout.

When you are too exhausted, you really won’t feel the urge to exercise. So instead of doing it after a tiring activity, why not exercise in the morning, when your mind is still fresh? It is also possible that the reason why you lack energy is because you don’t exercise. Physical activities stimulate the production of endorphins in our brain (the feel-good chemicals) which do not just make you feel energetic but also lower down your stress levels.

7.  It’s boring!

If you eat the same food every day, the taste gets worse and bland every time you eat it. Just like in exercising. So what’s the best way to bust boredom? Make exercising a creative activity and observe variety! It doesn’t always have to be the same workouts again and again. From time to time, engage in fun physical activities like swimming, cycling, wall climbing, etc.

8.  I don’t like to sweat.

No one wants to get sticky and greasy. But no one wants to get fat and lazy either! When you sweat, you don’t just flush excess water from your body, you also eliminate toxins and fats that are destroying your health.

9.  I’m too old for this!

With exercise, there is no age requirement! In fact, the older you are, the more you will benefit from exercising. To reduce your risk of dementia, memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease and other mental disorders, make exercise part of your lifestyle.

10.   I hate doing it alone.

Well, you don’t have to. Find an exercise buddy! Study shows that people who exercised with others shed more pounds than those who sweated solo.
