The Spice that Can Help You Shed More Fats
Many people, women in particular, invest a lot of money on weight loss products. Managing weight is one of the most difficult challenges nowadays because of the sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits that many of us engage in.
Despite all the wide range of dieting tips and programmes available today, the best and - will still be - the most effective is no other than a balanced diet and exercise. And when it comes to diet, did you know that there are certain herbs and spices that can speed up the process? Yes there are plenty of them. But today, let’s focus our discussion on one spice which can make you shed more fats and become healthier too! What is it?
Cumin.
You’ve probably heard about cumin. It’s a popular spice that is central to Indian cuisine. If you ever tried curry, then you have tasted cumin. This spice has a nutty and peppery flavour which adds a unique and really good flavour to a dish. Cumin is also commonly used in Mexican and Mediterranean cuisines. And because of its scientifically proven health benefits, cumin is now utilised as a key ingredient in different health products.
So how does cumin help you manage your weight?
There are actually several ways in which this amazing spice helps you lose weight.
First off - it goes as far as reducing your body fat percentage significantly. A study by Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences looked at the effects of adding cumin to the diet of obese women. Researchers found that those whose diet included cumin lost an average of 3 pounds than those whose did not. More impressively, they found that cumin reduced fat percentage by 14.64%. This is almost triple the fat percentage lost by obese participants who didn’t had cumin in their diet.
Another way cumin helps you burn more fats is by helping your body lower blood sugar levels which in turn reduce your food cravings. Keeping your blood sugar levels stable keeps your body feeling satiated by reducing your appetite for carbohydrates.
Cumin also boosts digestion. Did you know that just the aroma of cumin can already improve your digestion by stimulating the release of digestive tract juices? Apart from that, a compound present in cumin (called ‘thymol’) helps stimulate the secretion of acid, bile and pancreatic enzymes that play a role in digestion.
What’s more, cumin helps you sleep better. You may ask though: How does improving your sleep help you shed fats? Unfortunately, lack of sleep affects our metabolism and increases stress levels in our body which cause us to eat more and choose calorie-dense foods over the healthier, low-calorie ones. Cumin has sleep-inducing benefits which make it a great addition to one’s diet, especially of people who suffer from insomnia.
Cumin is a spice available year round. Whenever possible, buy whole cumin seeds as ground cumin easily loses its flavour. Anyway, cumin seeds can be easily ground using a mortar and pestle. To greatly boost the aroma and flavour, slightly roast whole cumin seeds before using in your recipe. Cumin is high in antioxidants and essential nutrients, such as manganese, phosphorus, calcium, vitamin B1 and magnesium.
