The Secrets to Life Resilience

Amy Taylor March 19, 2013

They say challenges only make us stronger. It’s true. But sometimes, life’s challenges can be very difficult to handle, and there are times that when they arrive, they come in clusters, making us weak and overwhelmed.

Resilience and Mental Health

Cling to optimism.

Never underestimate the power of perspective. Being optimistic is the number one step to increasing your life resilience. Instead of looking at the glass half empty, look at it half full. Try to see something good in everything that’s happening in your life. Optimism will give you the strength to face small or big trials that come your way.

Take life easy. Don’t forget to have fun.

They say laughter is the best medicine. A few seconds of laughter can incredibly make you feel good and increase your resilience to life’s difficulties. If you are too serious, you are less likely to appreciate simple things that can make you happy. If things around you are making you frown, do something to amuse yourself. Watch a funny movie, read a comic book, or talk about silly things with friends. Treat life as awesome as it can be, because that’s what it is.

Find the right people for support.

Most problems in life can be resolved easily and effectively with the help of others. But make sure you are choosing the right individuals to give you support. Many people are not comfortable sharing their problems with relatives and friends because they feel that they may be misjudged. In such case, it is much better to seek help from professional therapists.

Have faith.

Keeping faith during difficult moments can be hard to do. But it’s one of the best ways to boost your self-esteem and have peace of mind. Saying a little prayer can greatly improve your resilience and prepare you for greater challenges. When you’re distraught and in pain, go to a quiet place and reflect on the situation. What is its purpose? How is it going to make you stronger? What can you learn from it?

There are different ways to resolve a problem.

If you’ve tried to resolve the issue at hand but you’ve failed, try again. Maybe there’s a more effective approach to dealing with it. Just keep your options open.

Don’t be carried away by negative emotions.

Things happen for a reason. And definitely, that reason is to your advantage. Maybe you failed in the interview because you are destined to have a much better career. Maybe and your ex did not last long because you are meant for someone else, a much more deserving person. Focusing on the brighter perspective will make it easy for you to move forward and recover from the hardships you had in life.

Be proud of who you are.

Every person is blessed with abilities, skills and talents that are unique. Before going to bed tonight, list down all your strengths. Be as specific as possible. You will realise that you are special just the way you are. Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean that you must no longer strive to become a better person. While being thankful for your strengths, take the opportunity to explore more of your potentials. Don’t stop learning and improving your skills and abilities.

Never, ever give up.

When you find yourself still carrying on despite all the bad things that are happening in your life, it means you have built great resilience. Giving up seems to be the easiest way to get away from a problem but it’s not going to make you feel better in any way. NEVER GIVE UP.
