The Perfect Career: Follow your Bliss, Follow Your Happiness

Amy Taylor February 26, 2013

Ask 10 working professionals if they are happy about their job and you’ll discover that majority of them don’t. With the current economic downturn, being ‘choosy’ about your job is not really a practical thing to do. But are you willing to risk your happiness in exchange of a higher salary?

Following Your Bliss

There are many people who make six-digits a year out of their job but are still unhappy. Unhappy not because they are not satisfied with their earnings but because they are not actually doing the thing they love to do. Sadly, only a few people are able to achieve their dream career. But though it is difficult, following your bliss is possible!

But how you determine your bliss by the way?

Bliss is a type of work that you love so much. You do it not because of the monetary reward but because you find happiness and satisfaction out of doing it. If only you don’t have bills to pay, you will definitely do it for free! You know you are following your bliss when you are full of enthusiasm about your work. You wake up in the morning full of zeal and passion to get on your work, and at night, you thank God for such opportunity.

People who follow their bliss are not motivated by the money they’ll get. Their motivation comes from within – their true passion.

If you are stuck in a job that you hate, don’t be sad. You are not alone. As mentioned, majority of people are not living the career they want. What is important is that you keep looking forward to finding your bliss. And here’s how:

Unlock Your True Potential

Each one of us is has innate talents, skills and strengths. Some people are good at technology while some are good at arts, business, etc. On a sheet of paper, list down all the things you are good at, may it be sketching, writing, cooking, designing websites, or crafting artworks. Often, the things we excel at are those that we are truly passionate about.

Let Your Passion Drive You towards Your Bliss

Once you identified your true potential, the next thing you want to do is to work hard to make it a reality. It’s not enough that you are passionate about it. You got to have the drive, the willpower to pursue your bliss. Otherwise, it becomes a wasted opportunity. Don’t stop learning and don’t stop improving. If your passion is drawing, update yourself with the latest techniques and knowledge to be the best artist you can be. If you’re into business, spend time reading about the latest business trends, learn from people, and innovate.

Choose the Career that Best Matches Your Strengths

You can always pursue your bliss without having to be impractical. First, identify the professional fields where you are most suitable. Then, evaluate each field. Don’t just focus on the availability of the job or which one is most in demand today. You have to consider the future trend. Which one is going to be more in demand in 10 or 20 years? How do you picture yourself when that time comes?
