Surprising Anxiety Busters that are Really Effective

Shane Bell March 30, 2023

We all get anxious from time to time. Whether it’s the first job interview, the first presentation before the managers, or the first day in the University - some things can really bring butterflies in our stomach. Anxiety is a normal feeling. But it shouldn’t be something that takes control of our life. No matter how tough the situation is, we shouldn’t let anxiety overpower us.

Anxiety may be hard to fight back. Good thing is that there are several ways to defeat it. You probably know a few. Drinking green tea, working out, getting enough rest, and seeking therapy are among the most popular approaches to dealing with anxiety. But did you know there are some more? You may not always come across with these tips in self-help books but once you try them, you will be surprised of how effective they are. Ready? Let’s get started.

Clean your space.

Anxious of the fast-approaching client meeting? Do yourself a favour and clean your room - or the whole house! Your environment plays a big role in your emotions. If it is messy and disorganised, so how you feel. Like your stuff lying everywhere, your emotions can be all over the place too. This is why cleaning and organising your space is a great way to fight feelings of anxiety. A clean space gives you a sense of calmness and peace of mind. It relaxes you. Yes, it does the opposite thing of what anxiety does to your mind and body. Clutter makes you feel stressed and irritable. It makes you feel under pressure too. So the next time you caught yourself feeling tense and anxious thinking about all the stuff you need to do, steer clear your mind first by doing the household chores. What’s more, cleaning is a very effective form of exercise which is a scientifically proven strategy to fight anxiety.

Work on a colouring book.

There’s a reason why colouring books for adults are so in demand. Just as it keeps you feeling good when you were a kid, doing some colouring projects as an adult makes you feel better too! They are a good way to divert your attention from anxiety-provoking thoughts, sparking your creative mind, and unleashing your inner child. It’s a totally new experience. Want a more challenging project? Don’t just colour. Draw as well. Sketching, like colouring, has therapeutic benefits. It makes it easy to forget about your worries at the moment and recharge your batteries.

Fight it off, literally (with a gloves).

Is your anxiety making you feel so bad about yourself? It’s time to get punching and fight it off, literally! Any form of physical exercise is good for anxiety. A more intense workout is better. Also, boxing has a more special way of relieving anxiety because it makes you want to release all your energy, even your reserved ones. It lets you vent out without saying a word and release the strong emotions you have been wanting to get rid of.

Dress up. Smile. Be confident.

Being confident is one of the keys to fighting anxiety. And it starts with feeling good about yourself. Never let your inner critic win each time. Prove to it that you are actually better than what it thinks you are. Because that is the reality. You are far greater than what you think. So hush no more. Smile and feel confident. Anxiety fades away when you start treating yourself nicely.
