Super Herbs that Fend Off Flu Better than Vaccines

A comprehensive study published in the Cochrane Library found no evidence on the benefits of influenza vaccines. According to the researchers, studies that show the benefits of flu vaccines were mostly industry-funded. They also found that only less than five per cent of all adverse events on the use of flu vaccines had been reported.

It’s most probably true – some of the best medicines in the world are provided by nature. Years of research has shown that some herbs are as effective as, if not better than vaccines.

Astragalus – this herb has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. Astragalus is a known adaptogen, which means it helps protect the body against various stresses – whether physical, emotional and mental. This herb has been shown to provide protective benefits against cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, liver disease, and respiratory infections, according to the University of Maryland Medical Centre.

Golden seal – this is one of the most popular herbs in the United States. It is often combined with Echinacea to treat and prevent colds. Golden seal contains a compound called berberine that has been shown in test tube studies to kill a wide range of germs and disease-causing bacteria. Such compound was also shown to activate white blood cells, which in turn strengthens the immune system.

Thyme – this herb is a natural expectorant, which helps clear up the lungs faster. For an effective relief from cold or flu, steep two teaspoons of dried thyme in a cup of boiling water for 10 minutes. Or, add a few drops of thyme essential oil in a bowl of hot water. The steam coming from it, when inhaled, helps loosen mucus in the chest.

Licorice root – this herb contains a compound called glycyrrhizin that has antiviral effects against serious diseases, such as HIV and SARS.

Garlic – in a 2001 study, volunteers who took a daily dose of garlic supplement were less likely to get colds than the volunteers who took a placebo supplement. Garlic is effective in boosting the immune system, thus, reducing your risk of developing infections and other serious illnesses.

Echinacea – this herb may also work well with garlic, according to a study published in the Journal of the National Medical Association.

Elderberry – extracts from this botanical has been proven to shorten the duration of flu symptoms by as much as four days. Elderberry has been found to be effective at fighting up to 10 strains of flu virus.

Exercise, quality sleep and rest, and stress management are also necessary to lower your risk of developing flu and other diseases.
