Setting Powerful Goals and Achieving Them

I’m a big believer that just “getting things” won’t make us happy, worth more or better people. True, long lasting happiness comes from within. Yet we are human and we are entitled to all that we dream of and create an abundant, full and joyous life (if this is what we want). My practice is based on teaching my clients to learn how to be happy with what they have and who they are while pursuing all that they want.

One thing that all successful people have in common is that they have clear formulated and powerful goals. They take time to identify what it is that they want and build up a really clear and detailed picture of what achieving their goal will look and feel like. Then they go out there taking regular action that will lead them towards their goal. Research studies show a direct link between goals and enhanced performance and self-satisfaction.

If you don’t like the word goal, call it vision or whatever else that resonates with you. A goal is a dream or a desire with a date. Get excited about this and have fun with it.

Here are the specific guidelines and steps that I have found are key to not only set powerful goals but also achieve it. Learn to become the creator of your own life. If you do as stated below, expect your dreams and desires to soon become reality.

1)      Write down your goals.
The act of writing down your goals will engrave them into your subconscious; it is also an act of commitment as you take ownership over them, which in turn fuels motivation. If we don’t write our goals down, they are just a vague notion or a dream that will stay a dream and soon disappear.

2)      Your goals must be stated in the present and positive – as already achieved.

What is it that you really want out of life and for yourself? Who do you want to be? What do you want to do or have? Put this into a positive statement as you have already achieved it. A simple example is: “I am exercising 3 times a week for an hour feeling energised and proud of myself.”

3)      Make it exciting.
If one doesn’t like exercising “feeling energised and proud of myself” is what makes it just that little bit more exciting and motivating. Who doesn’t want to feel energised and proud of themselves?

4)      Be Specific.

Move away from generalization; be as specific as you can with what you want.

5)      Goals should be measurable.

With certain goals, i.e. financial goals it is more obvious as you can set a number. How will you measure other goals? Ask yourself questions like “How much? How will I feel? How will I know when I accomplished it?”

6)      Your goal needs to be realistic and attainable.
We surely should be stretched by a goal so we can grow and expand. Yet, make sure that it is still within reach. If the goal is too big, we might feel anxious, find ourselves procrastinating, and not know where to start or how to start. When this is the case break it down into smaller chunks.

7)      Make them relevant

Choose goals that matter – because if they don’t we simply waste our time. The following questions are good reminders.

        Does this seem worthwhile?

        Is this the right time?

Does this match my other efforts/needs?

Is it applicable in current socio- economic- technical environment?

8)      Set a date or time frame.

All goals need a date. A time frame gives you focus and enhances your motivation. Be realistic, if you set the date too close you might set yourself up for failure or create unnecessary stress; if it is too far away you may lose motivation or let it slip.

9)      Review your goals regularly.

Do it at least every morning and evening. You can also write your goals down on a card that you carry with you at all times and look at it whenever you can. It is said that a goal that is written down stands a much greater chance of achievement yet this chance can be increased to CERTAINTY when it is reviewed regularly. Take a few seconds for each goal, see it, feel it, visualize it.

10)   Take action.

Now take action, action, action. Best daily. All the above will set you up well to make your dreams reality. The magic lies in being consistent and show up for what you want.

I hope this blog has been of good use to you and will help you create a life you love. Start with setting your own powerful goals, state them right here right now in the comments below. Then remember to review them regularly and take action. Without change nothing changes. As always, I look forward to hearing and reading from you all.
