Revealed: Foods So Bad, The Nutritionists Would Not Eat
It is a fact of life that we eat to relinquish hunger. But health wise, we should also eat to stay healthy. If you want to cut your risk of developing heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity and other life-threatening diseases, make sure what you are eating is something your body will benefit from. Here are some of the foods that nutritionists wouldn’t dare to eat so you shouldn’t either!
Refined Grains
You may be unaware of this but your breakfast cereal might be the major cause of your low energy levels and increasing waist line. Grains are a haven of fibre, vitamins and minerals. But processing them can destroy their health benefits. Refined and re-fortified grain products like white rice, breakfast cereals, and pastas are no longer complex carbohydrates. They also lack essential nutrients they once had. Instead of refined grains, go for whole grains such as brown rice and breads, oats, and barley. They are not just healthy but also have weight loss effects!
Rice Cakes
They may be very tasty but if you have diabetes, the more reason why you wouldn’t want to eat rice cakes. They have a very high glycaemic index (GI) ratings as high as 91 (100 is the highest). You may want to avoid rice cakes completely if you have problems controlling your weight.
Diet Fizzy Drinks
Don’t get fooled by the word “diet”. These beverages can make you fat the way regular sodas do! Diet drinks also contain additional chemicals that damage the cells and increase your risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Seitan
This Asian meat substitute is very common among vegetarians. But contrary to popular belief, seitan is not a good food option. It is not made from soy but from wheat gluten – a highly allergenic protein that is derived from wheat-based products. Even if you don’t have a history of food allergy, eating too much of gluten-based foods can increase your risk of intolerance.
Shark Meat
Don’t get it wrong. Fish is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids which have amazing health effects. But some fish contain high amounts of mercury which overthrow the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. Shark is a great example of this. It has three times more mercury than tuna and other fish. Mercury is a toxic compound that is linked to cancer.
Sugar-Sweetened Drinks
Sugar can be deadly when taken in excessive amounts. It reduces good cholesterol and stimulates the production of the bad ones, increasing your risk of heart disease. Sweetened beverages contain empty calories that increase your waistline.
Grits
Do you like grits in the morning? You wouldn’t want to. Grits are small leftover pieces from processed corn. Just like refined grains, grits no longer contain essential nutrients and fibre. They are also high in calories and saturated fats.
