Almost everyone experiences sadness. It is perfectly all right to feel this way. But when sadness engulfs every other feeling and starts interfering in your day to day life, you need to take it seriously. Depression is a severe form of sadness that has a negative impact on the physical and mental well being of a person.

The symptoms of depressions are:

•        Feeling of worthlessness

•        Inability to concentrate

•        Getting easily irritated

•        Loss of appetite or over eating

•        Insomnia (sleeplessness)

•        Health issues such as digestive problems

The term clinical depression is reserved for extreme cases of sadness or depression. The causes of depression range from genetic to medical illness to history of abuse. Depression may be a result of change in seasons also. Post natal depression is another type of depression in which a mother feels depressed after giving birth to a child. Usually, post natal depression subsides after a day or two. In certain cases however it may reoccur after a year. Some people are predisposed to depression because of a condition known as bipolar syndrome. People affected by bipolar syndrome often report sudden bouts of over excitement and sadness.

When left untreated depression can have serious effects. Depression takes over the life of the person. Depressed people are not able to make decisions and are more prone to risky habits such as drug or alcohol addiction.

The following can help depressed people feel better;

Exercising
Physical exercise has shown to boost the production of feel good chemicals like serotonin, endorphins.

Sleeping
Sleeping for at least 8 hours is essential for the body. Lack of sleep is believed to exacerbate the condition.

Lifestyle changes
Make healthy changes in your life and exclude activities that stress you out.

Eating healthy
Eating healthy food can help a lot. Include nutritious food in your diet.

How can hypnosis help?

Depressed people think that there is nothing that can help them, which of course is incorrect. Depression can be treated with the help of hypnosis. Hypnotherapy for depression includes imagery and suggestion techniques that can help dispel negative thoughts and emotions.

Hypnosis can be used to treat cases of clinical depression caused due to a past traumatic incident. A hypnotherapist can access the painful memories and develop positive responses to those painful triggers.

There have been several researches done on the subject of hypnosis and depression.

According to JOSEPH DELTITO and LEE BAER (1986) HYPNOSIS IN THE TREATMENT OF DEPRESSION: RESEARCH AND THEORY. Psychological Reports: Volume 58, Issue, pp. 923-929 Hypnosis has been proven effective in treating various cases of non psychotic unipolar depression.

Feeling down can have an adverse effect on the everyday life of a person.

Sadness passes away in due course of time, however, in certain cases it stays for a prolonged period of time. Depression can take a toll on the health and mental well being of a person.
