Health-Boosting Eating Habits You Can Learn from the Greeks

Rebecca Lewis November 20, 2015

In the world where most people dream about eating healthy, there’s a place where clean and nutritious diet is actually a way of life. Yes, you are right. We are talking about Greece. Their cuisine, Mediterranean diet, which is globally known to be very healthy and flavourful, features more greens, a little of lean meat and fish, loads of herbs and spices, and a great deal of fruits and whole grains. This diet also incorporates healthy fats like olive oil and a little of red wine.

You might think that eating healthy is too good to be true. But actually, like Greeks, you can make it part of your life. Below are some essential tips if you want to start with this health-boosting and flavourful diet:

Make greens a staple in every mealtime.

Greeks consume a whole lot deal of greens. They would use it for salads, stews, roasts, and so much more. Preparing greens is so easy and doesn’t take so much time. And you don’t need so much seasoning to have a flavourful vegetable dish. You can simply steam it and dress with olive oil and juice. Whatever you are cooking, there’s a room for greens. Vegetables are really filling. They help boost your metabolism and supply your body with loads of essential vitamins and antioxidants.

Keep it whole, fresh and simple.

Greeks aren’t fans of processed foods. One of the most important characteristics of the Mediterranean cuisine is that it should be fresh, whole and simple. Forget about processed foods that contain ingredients you can’t even pronounce. Stock on fresh produce. Your grocery bill will thank you. And your health too!

‘Spice’ it!

You know why Mediterranean dishes are so flavourful? They contain herbs and spices. A lot of them most of the time. Instead of stocking on processed seasonings that are very high in salt, stock up on dried herbs and spices, such as paprika, cumin seeds, cayenne, and a whole lot more. You may also consider growing your own herbs. Most herbs, including mint, rosemary and basil are so easy to grow. Plus, you get to enjoy unlimited herbs that are fresh, aromatic and oozing with flavour.

Make cooking a fun experience.

Cooking has therapeutic benefits. And in Greece, cooking together is a traditional bonding activity. If you’ve never cooked all your life, you may feel overwhelmed at first. But that’s normal. As you become familiar with the ingredients, as well as how most vegetables and grains are cooked, you will find cooking a great experience. And who knows, you might just come up with your very own super delicious Mediterranean dish! For a more enjoyable experience, involve your family or friends in your next cooking activity.

Use a little cheese.

Cheese can really add so much flavour to salads, grilled dishes, wraps, stuffed vegetables and so much more. Feta cheese adds a hint of salty flavour to your dish and really goes well with herbs. As long as you consume it in moderation, this lovely dairy product can benefit your health too and make your mealtime so much more appetizing.

Indulge in homemade desserts.

Yes, even in Mediterranean cuisine, there’s a room for sweet treats too. But not the processed boxed ones you normally buy from local grocery stores. Think like a Greek when it comes to sweets - only eat those you made yourself. There’s so many benefits of making your own desserts. You get to choose the ingredients, make healthier alternatives, lessen the sugar, and add a healthier twist. Also, savouring your own creation is more fulfilling after all.

Unplug during mealtime.

Eating isn’t something you do along with watching a movie or browsing the web. After spending some time preparing your meal, of course you want to give it your undivided attention. Doing something while having your meal distracts you from enjoying the food and the experience. As a result, you feel less satisfied even after having a large portion. The secret to eating healthy is mindful eating. By paying attention to your food and the experience it brings, you increase the enjoyment and satiety during mealtime.
