Four Important Things Every Diabetics Should Understand

Amy Taylor February 17, 2016

Diabetes is a lifelong disease which can affect many aspects of a person’s life. Until now, scientists have not yet made the cure for it and most medications and treatments are used to manage the symptoms. Many people are diagnosed with diabetes each day. And it doesn’t only affect adults but young people as well.

But worry not. If you have just been diagnosed with diabetes, you should always remember that even though this disease is something you have to bear with for the years to come, it is possible to still live a normal life. There are just a few things that you should understand.

Your diet plays a big, big role.

One of the key components of managing diabetes is proper diet. You might hear of see a lot of news about some magic pill or supplement that can take your diabetes away. Unfortunately, there is none. What works so far, as most studies suggest, is a balanced diet. For diabetics, doctors recommend eating more greens and less plain carbohydrates like breads, pastries and pasta. Enjoying vegetables in their raw state is a great way to ensure that your body absorbs the essential nutrients it needs to fight diabetes.

Still, you can enjoy your food.

Enjoying what you eat is one of life’s pleasures. And just because you have diabetes doesn’t mean you can no longer enjoy food! It may take a little bit of time and effort, but by doing a research, you will realise that there are so many wonderful, budget-friendly recipes for diabetics that don’t only satisfy your palate but also help you manage your disease. Ever tried beef goulash? How about kale and lentil soup or apricot porridge with toasted seeds? These are just among the thousands of recipes you can really enjoy. So don’t think you’d stop enjoying food the moment you are diagnosed with diabetes.

Insulin isn’t the cure.

Many diabetes heavily depend on insulin injections. But then again, they don’t cure the disease. What many don’t realise is that the amount of insulin the body needs will increase until it is completely dependent on insulin injections. Apart from taking prescribed medications, you should also ensure that you are taking the natural yet long-term strategies to manage your condition. What shouldn’t be removed from your health goals is to keep an active lifestyle. Make exercise a part of your regular routine. Exercise has been scientifically proven to be effective in helping people manage diabetes.

You need emotional support too.

Apart from the debilitating symptoms and effects of diabetes, it can also take a huge toll on your emotional well-being. Some studies suggest that diabetics are more likely to become depressed. The reason? It’s the feeling of helplessness. It is really tormenting to know that you are struck by a disease that doesn’t have a cure. But then again, your life shouldn’t end there. Realise that despite having this condition, you still can live your life normally, like you used to before. Sure there are some diet and lifestyle tweaks that you should do. But as you begin to adopt a healthier lifestyle, it would feel like you never had the disease. If you are feeling depressed or anxious about your condition, talking to a counsellor or therapist can greatly help ease the emotional burden and restore that positive perspective you once had.
