Finding Your Purpose in Life – 6 Important Steps

Amy Taylor March 22, 2013

Every day, millions of people ask the same very difficult question – “What is my purpose in life?” For some, the answer comes so easily. But for many, it takes years before they can figure out the reason why they are struggling to live, despite the challenges, hardships and obstacles that come their way.

Knowing your purpose is essential to living a happy and meaningful life. The way we see our purpose depends on many factors, but our experiences, beliefs and personalities are among those that give the biggest impact. If you’re one of the millions who are currently searching for their life’s purpose, you are actually taking a step closer to finding yours if you follow these simple steps:

1.       Know your goals.

Your goals form a big part of your life’s purpose. But in order to get there, you must first know what they are. Identifying your goals is the same as answering what it is that you want in life, perhaps in 5 or 10 years. They must be quantifiable. Without a goal, it is very difficult to understand our life’s purpose. So you must be sure and aware of what you really want to achieve in life, what you want to be, and how you are going to be that person.

2.       Get enough of everything.

Living a well-balanced life is critical to finding and living your purpose. Many people are too focused on their careers, while others are very much focused on their personal relationships. Some live for the purpose of making a fortune alone, neglecting the most important things that make them truly happy. In order to live a balanced life, you need to learn how to prioritise. What are the things that are most important to you? Basically, these are things that make you reach your goals. This doesn’t mean though that you have to forget all the leisure – of course not. You simply have to set time for everything. Make a to-do list of your daily activities. But you have to make sure that those on top of your list are the most important.

3.       Know what’s blocking your way to your purpose.

You may not notice it but the many insignificant things in your daily life are actually preventing you from living your life’s purpose. They’re called ‘distractions’. Maybe this is the time to assess your day-to-day routines. Try this for one week – list down all the activities you do in a day – from the moment you wake up until you go back to bed at night. Recognise a pattern in your daily activities. Then, cross out the insignificant activities or schedule just a few hours for them in a week. For example, if you notice that you’re spending one hour of your daily life checking your social media accounts, playing games, or watching TV, maybe you can move them in a single day for two hours – maybe during weekends. This way, you can allocate more time on the more important tasks without depriving yourself from getting indulged.

4.       Listen to your body.

If you always wake up each day feeling stressed, lousy, and unmotivated, then something must be out of balance in your life. Your body can be the greatest predictor of life imbalance. Body pain, headache, fatigue, anxiety and low mood are symptoms that you are not doing good living your life’s purpose. But it is not enough that you listen to your body. You have to respond to it. Make sure to do something to ease the pain and make your body feel better again. When you feel good inside, you become more inspired to live a day with purpose. Remember, your body is a reflection of your choices and decisions in life.

5.       Learn from experience – it’s the best teacher after all.

Life’s experiences can make or break you. It’s up to you how you are going to use them to your advantage. By being positive, you can learn a lot of things from any mistake you do and every challenge that comes your way. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Who knows, they are probably the ones that are going to help you realise your purpose in life. Be flexible. As you grow older, circumstances may change. Your wants may alter. Listen to your inner self. It doesn’t always mean that what you dreamed of years ago is still your dream today. Be open to possibilities, and don’t be afraid to seek out what’s best for you.

6.       Don’t forget to enjoy!

Don’t get too carried away looking for your life’s purpose. Take a break and enjoy the moment. The road to your life’s purpose can be bumpy at times so you need to recharge your batteries as often as needed. If you run too fast to get there, you might miss the little things that make your journey a worthwhile experience.
