Finally: Scientists Discover the Cure for Gray Hair and Vitiligo
What if you can grow old without your hair turning gray? In a study published in The FASEB Journal, a team of researchers from Bradford University have discovered a way to reverse the onset of gray hair. Soon, hair dyeing using chemical pigments will just be a thing of the past. What’s more, the same procedure can be used to reverse the effects of vitiligo, a condition characterised by the presence of white patches in the skin.
Scientists at Institute for Pigmentary Disorders, in association with E.M. Arndt University of Greifswald, Germany and the Centre for Skin Sciences, School of Life Sciences at the University of Bradford, United Kingdom, found that gray hair is produced by the massive oxidative stress through the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in the hair follicle, causing the hair to bleach itself from the inside out. The researchers found that such accumulation of hydrogen peroxide can be prevented using a topical, UVB-activated compound called PC-KUS which the team has developed.
For their study, lead author Karin U. Schallreuter, M.D., and his colleagues analysed an international group of 2,411 patients with vitiligo. In that group, 2.4 per cent were diagnosed with strictly segmental vitiligo (SSV), whilst 3.2 per cent were diagnosed with mixed vitiligo. The research was the first to show that patients who have SSV within a certain nerval distribution involving skin and eyelashes exhibit the same oxidative stress as observed in the much more frequent general NSV. This resulted in the reduction of antioxidant capacities.
The findings were used by the researchers to develop a new treatment strategy that can permanently reverse the effects of vitiligo and gray hair.
“For the first time, an actual treatment that gets to the root of the problem has been developed. While this is exciting news, what’s even more exciting is that this also works for vitiligo.” said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. He added that although vitiligo is a condition that is technically cosmetic, it can have serious socio-emotional effects of people. “Developing an effective treatment for this condition has the potential to radically improve many people’s lives."
