Different Ways Stress Destroys Your Body
Stress is a silent killer. You might think that it goes away with some sleep and rest. But the harm a single episode of stress brings to your body can be tremendous and difficult to cure. While stress is something you cannot avoid completely, you should learn how to make your body react to it more efficiently so stress doesn’t dominate your health.
So in what ways does stress destroy your body? Here they are:
It causes havoc in your digestive system.
Stomach cramps? Constipation? LBM? If you suffer from any of these frequently but haven’t been diagnosed for a relevant health condition, chances are, you are suffering from severe stress. Stress is one of the major causes of gastrointestinal problems. That is because stress lowers your digestive system’s ability to absorb nutrients. Another thing, it hampers your ability to choose the right food to feed your body. Studies show that stress makes people eat unhealthy stuff which boost the harmful bacteria in the gut, overpowering the good ones. For some people, stress wouldn’t make them eat, which can also lead to digestive problems like ulcer.
It is lethal to your mental health.
One of the major body organs that are heavily affected by stress is the brain. Stress can literally ‘shrink’ your brain, which leads to the impairment of your cognitive function. Stress also leads to health patterns that further damage your brain health, such as poor sleep. Chronically stressed people suffer from sleep problems like insomnia. Furthermore, lack of sleep is one of the biggest contributors to health problems like high blood pressure, stroke and cardiovascular disease.
Stress damages your skin too.
If you have been seeing a dermatologist quite too often, you’ve probably heard them asking you the magic question many times: “Are you under any stress?” Not only does stress wrecks your body from the inside. Its harmful effects even extend to your skin! You may have noticed that during the intense moments of your life, your skin is at its worse condition. You may experience acne breakouts and other skin issues like hives - a very painful condition characterised by the onset of scaly rash in different parts of your body which itch and hurt at the same time. These effects are due to your body’s reaction to stress and weakened immunity.
Stress promotes pain and inflammation.
One of the most disturbing facts about stress is that it causes inflammation in your body, which in turn, spurs pain and other serious medical conditions. For instance, did you know that stress is the most common cause of migraine? Migraine is a very painful and disabling condition that could happen to anyone. The pain is so severe that it can hamper your ability to concentrate, and even move. In 2013, a study showed how chronic stress leads to high levels of inflammation in the body. The research team from Ohio State University, the University of California, Los Angeles, Northwestern University and the University of British Columbia found that stress changes gene activity of immune cells before they enter the bloodstream so that they’re ready to fight infection or trauma — even when there is no infection or trauma to fight. This then leads to increased inflammation.
These are just among the so many ways stress destroys your body. That is why prioritising stress management is important. Eating right, exercising and giving yourself enough rest on a daily basis are simple yet powerful strategies to bust stress and keep your body healthy.
