Avoid Those Nasty Tooth Cavities with these Health Tips!

James Richardson January 18, 2013

Many of us try to abide to good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day and using mouthwash and/or flossing. But despite this health practice we still need to keep a watchful eye on our diet so as to avoid any decay or acidic erosion to our pearly whites! A lot of healthy foods like fruit are very harmful to teeth and we feel that these pointers below should help you avoid those nasty tooth cavities.

Eat Just One Sweet A Day

Eating delicious desserts and sugary sweets all day causes our sugar levels to fluctuate in our body and when this happens the minerals in our teeth can decrease. This includes the minerals calcium and phosphorous. To avoid this depletion, try to limit yourself to one treat a day or try to limit the consumption of these processed sugars which are far worse than the natural sugars found in fruit.

Limit Your Citrus Fruit Intake

We are all told by health organisations and even the government that it is best if we eat 5-a-day and that ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’, yet in fact fruits, especially the citrus variety, are very damaging to your teeth and are a quick and sure-fire way to getting a cavity.

It’s still healthy to consume one citrus fruit a day, but limiting fruit juices especially those that are processed, is a crucial step to stop the acidic levels of the fruit from eroding the enamel from your teeth which makes them even more vulnerable. This, in turn, can lead to cavities.

Indulge in Butter

Did you know that grass-fed cows that are responsible for the butter we spread on our toast and crumpets that contains a cavity fighting vitamin known as Activator X. Other researchers have also found that typically cultures that harbour the least amount of tooth cavities do not remove natural animal fats from their diet and actually indulge instead. Both delicious and nutritious!

Boost Your Calcium with Raw Dairy

The key to building strong bones and teeth is typically considered by many to be a good, healthy consumption of calcium. As mentioned before, animals such as goats and cows that produce milk contain within this rich drink very absorbable calcium because their diet is rich in plants and grass. The pasteurization that occurs during the process of mass production of dairy products actually destroys the vitamin c content in calcium so it is actually better for you to get it from the raw source.

If you don’t have a cow or a goat lying around, go for some natural, dairy yogurt which will be rich in calcium.

Floss!

Last but definitely not least is floss! Many may overlook flossing as they assume brushing and a healthy diet alone may protect them but in fact brushing can help push and shove bacteria and bits of food deep into the gum linings and between hard to reach teeth.

For this reason it becomes even more important to floss by using dental tape so that you can reach these pieces of food and really give your teeth the deep clean they deserve.

I think also, that looking after your teeth and maintaining good hygiene is not just good for your body but also for your mind. It stops you stressing and your self-esteem rises, so that you don’t feel conscious about giving everyone a nice, wide and beautiful smile.
