Aromatherapy: The Healing Benefits of Natural Scents
It can really be surprising and fascinating to know how the power of scent can have therapeutic benefits. But that’s what aromatherapy has proven over and over again. Whilst the use of aromatherapy has become very popular in recent years, it is actually a part of a tradition that began thousands of years ago. Aromatherapy is essentially the use of plant-derived, aromatic essential oils to support physical and emotional health. These oils are concentrated, meaning they are distilled from seeds, bark, stems, flowers and other parts of the plant. And whilst the scent of these oils can really make us smile, the benefits of aromatherapy extend more than improving our mood. Scientific investigations suggest that it is highly effective in treating many health problems too. The therapy involves varying methods, like topical application, massage, inhalation or water immersion to stimulate the desired responses.
Amazing Benefits of Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is popular for its ability to promote relaxation. In a 2011 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, it was found that participants who were using aromatherapy felt less pain and had reduced stress levels during a stressful situation, compared to participants who were not using aromatherapy. In another study published in 2009 and carried out by UK researchers, it was found that patients who had aromatherapy massage were less anxious or depressed for up to 2 to 6 weeks after the massage but there was no difference at 10 weeks.
Aromatherapy, especially citrus and vibrant aromas, have uplifting tendencies that tend to reduce the effects of depression. A 2009 study recommends aromatherapy as a complementary and alternative therapy for patients with depression and secondary depressive symptoms arising from various types of chronic medical condition.
The healing effect of aromatic plants has also been shown to also promote heart healthy by lowering blood pressure. A 2006 study published in the Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing, aromatherapy has been shown to lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension. The calming benefits of aromatherapy allow you to relax enough to get your blood pressure levels closer to a healthy range.
The use of essential oils have been found to promote immune system, digestive, heart muscle, lung, joint and cartilage, and kidney function, healthy bone structure, and nervous system. It also believed to help lower blood sugar levels, maintain good cholesterol levels, promote restful sleep, suppress occasional muscle spasms, promote sexual vigour and performance, and alleviate minor, everyday pains.
Using Aromatherapy
There are many ways to use aromatherapy. Essential oils are often used in massage treatments, wherein they are rubbed all over the body and allowed to soak into the skin. Another method is to apply a few drops of the desired oil onto a handkerchief, hold it under your nose and breathe deeply. If you’re after restful sleep, dab a few drops of essential oil like lavender on your pillow before sleeping. You can also add a few drops to a bubble bath and enjoy its rejuvenating and refreshing benefit.
