Are You Beating Yourself Too Much? Do These

Amy Taylor February 16, 2015

It is natural for us, humans, to aim for the best. We all aim to be successful, beautiful, sexy, rich and famous – and all those other positive qualities. It is common for us to desire a big house, fancy cars, and all the comfort and luxury we can have in this world. But sometimes, we get too absorbed with all our wants and ambitions in life that we tend to overwork and beat ourselves up.

There’s really nothing wrong about aiming for the better. But it should not be to the extent that your physical and mental health are already at stake. Here are ways to stop beating yourself up.

Ditch perfection.

No one is perfect. Every person has good and bad qualities, in or out. Yes, those models in the magazine look pretty and gorgeous. But they don’t symbolise perfection. That is simply what the media wants to project. So avoid comparison and self-criticism. Saying harsh things to yourself is not going to do you any good. Instead of focusing on your flaws and imperfections, concentrate on your positive qualities, and work on improving them. Other people’s opinion about you doesn’t have to become your reality.

Stop working so hard.

So you’ve got a goal? And you want to achieve it the soonest? Good for you. But if you’re not giving yourself enough time to rest, you are really headed into big trouble. That’s because when you want something so bad, you will constantly push yourself to work on it, even if it means sacrificing a lot of things, giving up your social life, or paying less attention to the people around you. You may end up sleeping less to stretch the time for work, even kicking yourself when you make mistakes. There’s nothing wrong about working hard to reach your goal. But if you’re too focused on it, you will end up feeling burned out and fed up. So you’re more likely to end up failing. The key is to observe work-life balance. Work smart and let yourself breathe.

Stop blaming yourself.

There are some things that our way beyond our control. But sometimes, we can’t help but blame ourselves for it. But the more you do, the more you are making it hard for yourself to move forward and redo the mistakes or get up from failures. Whenever the thought of your past mistakes is discouraging you, remember this – mistakes are not meant to be reversed but learned. Forgive yourself. Let go of the pain. And keep moving forward.

Stop being too serious.

If you spend all your days taking life too seriously and beating yourself up, you will certainly grow old unhappy, even if you have already reached your goals and ambitions in life. Remember that you are a human – not a robot. Just because you are taking a break from work doesn’t mean you are lazy and undeserving of having a good life. Life can be much easier and better if you stop jam-packing your life. Take it slowly. Enjoy the ride. Smile. Laugh and be happy!
