Amazing Health Wonders of Blackcurrants

Sharon Moore February 11, 2016

Blackcurrants are tart berries that are native to Northern Europe and Asia. Their deep purple colour demonstrates their wonderful health benefits. More than being a rich source of vitamin C, blackcurrants provide so much more - from cutting your diabetes risk to protecting you from cancer.

Blackcurrant and Diabetes

Just recently, a team of researchers from University of Aberdeen found that eating blackcurrants can help reduce diabetes risk among overweight individuals. Their theory was that antioxidants in the fruit affect how the body breaks down carbohydrates and sugar. This reduces the amount of sugar that ends up in one’s bloodstream after every meal.

Herbal Medication

Blackcurrants are widely used in Europe as an herbal remedy. Women with PMS drink blackcurrant juice to ease their symptoms. It is also used to aid flu, colds, and fever. Apart from the fruit itself, the oil and leaves of blackcurrant are often used for medication. Blackcurrant oil taken from its seed contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) - a type of omega-6 fatty acid which helps keep inflammation in your body in check. As many of us know, inflammation is the major cause for many different health problems, including cancer. In some studies, GLA has been shown to be as effective as over-the-counter medications in treating pain issues.

Immune Booster

Eating blackcurrant regularly is a great way to boost your immune system, no matter how old you are. A study published in the American Society for Clinical Nutrition found that consumption of blackcurrants improved the immunity of older adults by reducing the levels of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE2) in their bodies - the hormone-like substances that help the muscles and blood vessels contract and relax. Such substances are released when they body sustains an injury. However, too much of prostaglandin triggers inflammation and prevents the immune system from working properly.

Antioxidant Powerhouse

We all know that grape juice and wine are good for our heart. But blackcurrant is equally good, if not better. A British study published in Journal & Nutrition found that polyphenolic-rich beverages promote heart health, and among the best choices are blackcurrant and pomegranate.

Vitamin C Superstar

The role of vitamin C in our health cannot be emphasized enough. It is used by the body to perform different functions, from producing collagen to metabolising protein. Getting enough vitamin C also helps you fight and get rid of flu, colds, and other diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

Skin Health

Yes - you read it right. Did you know that blackcurrant oil is used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including eczema? Also, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of this very nutritious berry may also help fight psoriasis - a very serious skin problem in which skin cells multiply up to 10 times faster than normal, causing raised, red plaques covered with white scales.

Blackcurrant does have a very strong tartness. To enjoy it, you can juice it while combining with other fruits, or add it to your morning cereal, yoghurt, or salad. If you’re after good health, these marvellous little berries are something you should indulge in on a regular basis!
