ADHD: Tips to Help With Time Management
One of the most common issues that people with ADHD encounter is the difficulty managing time and getting things done earlier. Often, tasks that can be done in an hour or less take days or weeks for ADHD sufferers to be completed. This then leads to disappointments and frustrations which usually aggravate their condition.
Whether you have ADHD or you simply have troubles managing your time efficiently, there’s something you can do to practise and achieve productivity. Here are some practical tips for you:
Plan ahead. Start each day with a plan of the activities you need to accomplish. If you find it useful to write a ‘to-do’ list or create memos on your mobile phone, so be it. When you know what to do first and what to do next, you can save a lot of time without exhausting much of your energy thinking and worrying about tasks you have to do.
Assess your daily routines. Take time to evaluate your day-to-day routines. What are the things you do that aren’t actually helping you reach your goals? What are the important things you should be doing but you’re not giving time and attention to? List them all in a sheet of paper and cross out the unimportant tasks. Once you do this, you will realise you really have more time to accomplish your daily goals.
Keep your environment well-organised. Clutter can significantly affect your productivity. If you notice that your desk is getting more and more chaotic, take time to reorganise everything. Invest on durable cabinets, multipurpose storage systems, organisers and other stuff that will maintain cleanliness and order in your home or office.
Avoid procrastination. If you have the habit of delaying things until you figure out you already have a very little time left, it’s time that you deal with this unproductive habit very seriously. Too much procrastination can prevent you from reaching your goals. Remember, you can’t turn back the time. If you keep on delaying things, accomplishing your goals will be delayed as well. Stand up and take action!
Make your life easier. Delegate tasks if possible. You really don’t want to do it all alone. Seeking help from the right people can boost your productivity without stressing yourself to the max. Determine the tasks (the most time-consuming ones) that can be done by others. But you have to be responsible and smart in delegating tasks or else, you may suffer from the outcome.
Prepare ahead for tomorrow. Do you always find yourself spending countless hours looking for the right clothes to wear? Does it take you extra minutes preparing your bag and checking if all your ‘must-haves’ are there? If yes, it will greatly help you if you will prepare those things in the evening. It won’t take an hour to pick the best outfit, gather accessories and prepare your bag and other belongings. This way, you can reduce your morning stress!
Saying ‘no’ can save you lots of time. You are in the middle of a paperwork when a friend called, asking you to join them for a beer session. Deep inside, you really don’t want to go because the report is due tomorrow and you haven’t even done it halfway. Well, saying ‘no’ is simply the best solution for this. If you are the kind of person who finds it hard to say ‘no’ and decline offers, you could be putting your productivity at risk. Learn how to say ‘no’. Think of various situations and practise how you are going to respond. It is easier than what you think!
