8 Things that Unknowingly Zap Your Energy
We all ran out of energy from time to time. The stressful day in the office, the sleepless nights we spent working on a project, or that huge box of donuts – they can all cause our energy levels to fluctuate. But if you are constantly feeling drained, it’s time to consider which among your daily habits are bringing you down.
Check out the following energy zappers and see how many apply to you:
Caffeine
Sure, a cup of coffee can keep your senses alive. But it can also make you feel “tired and wired”. If you need to fall asleep but you drink it off with coffee, your natural sleep cycle is destroyed. This makes you less energetic, grumpy and light-headed the next day. Anything else that has caffeine – tea or chocolate – can be harmful to your health if you eat too much of them.
Exercise
Exercise can zap your energy in two ways. First, if you exercise less, you will be physically, mentally, and emotionally drained. Physical activity triggers endorphins – the “feel good” chemicals that raise our energy levels. Without it, you will feel sluggish. But too much exercise can also be an issue. Overtraining depletes your energy, breaks down your muscles, and makes you weaker. What’s more, overdoing exercise suppresses your body’s resistance to infections, therefore increasing your risk of contracting illnesses.
Sugar
Sugar provides quick energy but it also disappears in a snap. What’s more, after your energy level drops, your body tends to crave for more sugar. And as we all know, sugar is not good for our body. When it comes to food, the best sources of energy include lean protein (yoghurt, animal meat, fruits, and vegetables), whole grains, and nuts.
Lack of Sleep
If you suffer from sleep disorders, or you have poor sleeping habits, chances are you also have issues maintaining a good level of energy. Make sure you are getting enough sleep every night. Sleeping and waking up at the same time everyday is one good way to establish a healthy sleeping pattern.
Dehydration
You need water to keep your tissues hydrated and keep your energy levels high. So make sure you are properly hydrated. Bring a bottle of water with you anywhere you go. If you want, you can dress it up by adding citrus slices.
Clutter and Disorganization
That big pile of clutter in your home could be making you more lethargic. Another thing – looking for lost or misplaced stuff or trying to recall where you’ve put your item can cause you big mental drain. Being well-organised can really save you lots of energy.
Stress
Too much stress can quickly deplete your energy resource. It makes you more sluggish and unable to concentrate. It also makes you feel anxious, irritable and depressed. To manage stress effectively, incorporate stress-busting strategies in your daily routine – whether it’s yoga, meditation or deep breathing exercises.
Self-esteem Issues
Trying to please people around you and trying to fit in can zap your energy to the max. If you have issues with low self-esteem, consider seeking help from a therapist. Learn to love and accept yourself for who you are.
Lack of energy makes you less productive and ultimately, unhappy. So before it starts affecting your daily life, you must do something about it. And if lack of energy is already bringing hurdles to your health and well-being, consider seeking professional help.
