6 Bitter Facts about Desserts
Who doesn’t love desserts? Most of us love these sweet treats. They are just so full of lovely flavours that melt and burst in our mouth. But for health-conscious individuals as well as those who have health issues, desserts are often ‘off limits’.
Here are some bitter facts that you should know about your favourite desserts:
Today’s cookies are five times more fattening than 20 years ago.
20 years ago, one chocolate chip cookie only had 55 calories and was larger in size. Today, same cookies that are only about the size of your palm contain 275 calories! Plus, a lot of artificial flavourings and sugar are being used today, which make desserts really unhealthy.
Apple pie isn’t as healthy as you think.
Apple is one of the healthiest fruits out there. But place it in a bowl, add sugar, corn syrup, and all other flavourings and you will have a pie filling that has higher calories than a piece of chocolate cake with frosting.
You need to walk for at least three hours to burn funnel cake calories.
The plain, no-topping serving of this deep-fried treat has whopping 825 calories! That means you need to spend 3 hours on a treadmill to work it off.
Desserts are really something to share.
If you eat that one full serving of banana split, you get to take at least 1,000 calories. That’s about half of the total calories women need to have for the entire day! So sharing it with someone could save you more or less 500 calories. Plus, the taste gets sweeter too.
Fudge has lower calories than meringue pie tips.
Chocolate fudge might appear more calorie-dense than lemon meringue pie tips but actually, it has fewer calories. An inch-square of fudge does have 100 calories whilst a serving of the meringue pie has 300 calories.
Not all coffee beverages are good for you.
A cup of coffee after meal can be a good idea if you are looking to pass on the dessert. But be careful of what you pick. A 16-ounce of coffee with steamed whole milk and mocha syrup can give you 330 calories, larger than a slice of fudge. So the next time you go to the coffee shop, skip the supersized versions.
Just because desserts are often unhealthy doesn’t mean you should give up your craving for these sweet treats. The good news is that you can actually eat something sweet, fulfilling but not fattening or disease-causing. You just have to choose carefully.
It’s really a good idea to learn how to bake. Why? Basically, most of the desserts and pastries you can buy from stores and bakeshops are loaded with tons of butter, sugar, white flour and all other fattening ingredients, unless you go to a health food store that specifically offers low-calorie goods. They say nothing beats the taste of homemade cookies, cakes, pies and other sweet delights. That’s correct. What’s more, you get to take control of what ingredients to use and how much. For instance, if you are making apple pie, you can always cut down the butter and sugar.
Then, you want to learn healthier substitutes. By reading health books more often, you will be surprised to learn that there are plenty of healthy alternatives to traditional dessert ingredients. For instance, did you know you can substitute unsweetened applesauce for butter? You can also try avocado, plain Greek yoghurt, and prune puree.
And lastly, eat just the right portion. It’s easy to over eat desserts because they don’t feel heavy on your tummy and well, they taste so good. But keep in mind that the secret to a lean and healthy body is moderation. It’s really okay to indulge once in a while but make sure you are getting just the right portion size.
