5 Tips to Get into Meditation Easily

Rebecca Lewis July 28, 2014

For many of us – especially busy professionals as well as full-time mums – managing our daily routines can be stressful. Like everyone else, your mind could be filled with worries, to-do lists, and responsibilities. All these can get in the way of your mental and physical health and expose you to chronic illnesses.

This is where meditation becomes very useful. This practice makes us calm, relaxes us, and strengthens our emotional health. It clears your mind from mental clutter, helps you focus clearly, and makes you more productive. Ultimately, meditation can make you happier.

But sometimes, meditating can be tough. You could be too busy at work, or too occupied with worries that you can’t even pay attention to the present moment. But moments like these are times when you need meditation the most. So here are easy ways to prepare your mind and body, and get into the meditation mode.

Schedule it. It is important that you schedule time for meditation. It’s up to you if you want to do it in the morning, during your lunch break or in the afternoon. You can practise meditation for as long as 30 minutes or if you have less time, you can do it for as quickly as 5 minutes. But the most important thing is you practise consistency.

Realise that there’s no right or wrong way to meditate.

Many people are intimidated by the idea of meditation. They constantly worry and wonder if they are doing it right, not knowing that this affects their practice. So don’t think that just because you are new to meditation, or you haven’t had formal training, you won’t be able to practise this healing exercise. You can, you just have to let yourself to.

Know that meditation isn’t always what you think it is.

You need not be in a lotus position like you see on TV or internet. You can go to a quiet place, say your room, sit on your bed and be comfortable. Once you get used to meditating, you will be able to practise it practically anywhere and even when you are surrounded with distractions.

De-clutter your mind. To get started, you want to erase all your worries first. There’s an easy way to do this – write it down. You want to start your day with a clear mind and a defined set of goals to accomplish. Or else, you end up feeling stressed and unproductive. It’s the same thing with meditation. Come up with a list of things that bug your mind. Write down all things that are bothering you – including your to-do lists. Spend a few minutes in this activity and be surprised of how it can make you more open to a meditative state.

Pay attention to your breathing.

Mindful breathing is essential to practising meditation. By breathing properly, you let go of the tension in your body and put your mind to a more peaceful and calm state. Breathe at a slower phase. Let the fresh air enter your system and make you calmer.

Meditation has so many benefits to your mind and body so practising it on a regular basis is really recommended. No matter how busy you are, try to insert meditation into your daily routine. By incorporating these tips, you can get into meditation more easily.
