5 Secrets to Healthy Ageing
In this fast-paced world where everything we need comes in an instant, a healthy, active lifestyle has really began to become an elusive dream for many of us. Few people grow old healthy and more people are diagnosed with health problems at a very young age.
The good news is – we can change our fate. We can enjoy the benefits of living in the modern world and grow old healthy at the same time. And below are the secrets to a healthy ageing:
Cut down on foods high in saturated fats.
You probably know that saturated fats are bad for your heart because they trigger plaque build-up in your arteries, leading to cardiovascular problems. But don’t you know these nasty fats are also harmful for your brain and can affect your concentration and memory? Yes. So cut down on red meat, butter and other foods that are high in saturated fats. Instead, add more fatty fish and healthy monounsaturated fats into your diet as they benefit both your heart and brain.
Protect your joints.
Getting older doesn’t mean you must quit running or your favourite sports. Staying active is critical in healthy ageing. Many older people think that running can wreck their knees. But studies suggest otherwise. Running is linked to stronger bones and joints, happier state of mind, and overall health.
Rediscover sex.
Love-making isn’t only for the young. In contrast to the popular belief, older people tend to have more satisfying sex life. Why? Because they are older, they are more experienced. They are more confident. They perform better at present than they did 10 or 20 years ago. Rediscovering your intimate life can actually make you happier and healthier.
Look for new experiences.
Don’t ever think you’re too old to learn something or pursue a different career. Going out of your comfort zone and trying and experiencing new things create new pathways in your brain, keeping your mind healthy as you age. Learning new things can also promote happiness and fulfilment.
Work out.
This is very, very important. If you want to slash your risk of Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and many other chronic illnesses, make exercise a priority. Exercise improves blood flow to the brain and helps new brain cells grow. Just 30 minutes of physical activity every day, 5 times a week can do great wonders in your physical and mental health, and boost longevity.
So you weren’t that health conscious in your 30s or 40s? Don’t frown. It is never too late to adopt healthy habits that can change your life. It may be difficult at first but it isn’t impossible. Exercising more and eating healthier can make a big difference, whether you’re already in your 50s, 60s or 70s.
