3 Habits that Are as Bad as Smoking

Lisa Franchi June 23, 2016

Not a smoker? Good to know. But just because you don’t smoke doesn’t mean that you are as fit and as healthy as you think you are. Research has shown that many of us have daily habits that can harm our health as much as smoking does. If you are guilty of any of these habits, you better start thinking about making a change.

Eating too much meat.

Meat lover? Uh-oh. You better start reducing your meat intake. While it can be a good source of protein, red meat contains a hormone that can promote the growth of cancer cells. In a study published in the journal Cell Metabolism, people whose diets are high in animal protein were found to be four times more likely to die of cancer than people on low-protein diets. You may want to replace some of your protein sources with vegetarian protein. And you can get it from foods like tofu, beans, fish and vegetables. It is okay to eat red meat from time to time. But not too much. Also, when cooking meat, consider marinating it first in herbs and spices. Research has shown that doing so can reduce the amount of cancer-causing compounds that are produced when meat is cooked over high heat. Take off the fats. You want leaner cuts.

Sitting all day.

Even if you exercise regularly, studies have shown that too much sitting can take a huge toll on your health like smoking does. Prolonged sitting has been linked to many serious conditions like diabetes, heart disease, breast, colon and prostate cancer, and even mental illnesses like depression. If you work in front of the computer, make it a habit to get up from time to time from your desk. During your break, take a quick stroll. Stand and spend a few minutes cleaning, or do some stretching. It will make you feel more energetic and you get healthier too!

Not getting enough sleep.

No matter how busy you are, make it a priority to have a good night sleep each time. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to severe health outcomes, ranging from heart disease to cancer and dementia. Yes, it can take a huge toll on your mental health. In fact, brain scan studies suggest that brains of people who have chronic sleep deprivation shrink! And even though you are having at least 7-8 hours of shut-eye, if your quality of sleep is poor, you still are at risk.
