Are you too busy to relax? You are not alone. One of the major complaints of most adults, especially working professionals is that they don’t have enough time to relax and enjoy the ‘fruits’ of their labour. What’s more, some of them feel terribly guilty whenever they take time for themselves.

But the thing is – when we are able to maintain the balance between our work and personal life, and we take good care of ourselves, we function much better and more productive at work, and we are able to effectively manage our stress levels. At the same time, we get to enjoy the things that we love doing.

You don’t always have to take a leave from work to relax and de-stress. Neither do you have to spend a lot. You can try the following simple, inexpensive techniques that are proven to stimulate relaxation and reduce stress.

Go for a walk. Burned out? During your lunch break, go out of the building and take a stroll around the block. Let the smell of the flowers, grass, and trees fill your senses. Let the beautiful scenarios surrounding you uplift your spirit. Then slowly get rid of the negative thoughts and emotions that are bugging you and replace them with positive things. Remind yourself how blessed you are. Being grateful has been scientifically proven to help increase happiness and reduce stress.

Get moving. Exercise is one of the best stress relievers. When you exercise, your brain produces endorphins, natural chemicals that improve mood and reduce pain. It also increases your energy levels, helping you stay more productive for the rest of the day.

Meet with friends. Our friends could offer us support, distraction and comfort every time we feel overwhelmed about different things. Meet with your friends after work for a quick coffee or a delicious dinner.

Run. Make it a habit to jog every day. If it’s possible, instead of taking the bus, put on your running shoes and jog your way to the office. Running has proven de-stressing abilities. It helps reduce headache, alleviates depression symptoms, and boosts confidence. It also helps you burn extra calories.

Give time for play. Playtime is something that is not exclusive for children. Come on, feed that child inside you. Think of that activity you enjoy doing when you were still a kid. It really is relaxing to go back to the old times.

Take a power nap. Napping has really refreshing benefits. If you sleep in the middle of the day, when you wake up it would feel like your day has just started. Sleep makes you more productive as it replenishes lost energy. It also makes you more creative, less stressed, healthier, and most of all – happier. A 15 or 30-minute nap will do you a long way.

Unplug. Most of us need internet to do work. But staying online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week can put a huge toll on your health and well-being. Instead of surfing the web during your free time, consider other recreational activities that don’t involve computers, especially during weekends. Create a scrapbook, cook something different, read a book, go out with friends, etc.

Meditate. When we are stressed and all, our minds tend to be filled with overwhelming thoughts that make us anxious and more likely to be sad and depressed. Meditation can do a lot of wonders to your physical and mental health. When you meditate, you let go of tension in your body and you reduce negative emotions that make you more stressed. Find a place that is quiet and has no distraction and slowly let go of every single thought, focusing your attention to your breathing.

Practise breathing techniques. You don’t have to go out of the office or get up from your chair to do this simple relaxation technique. Many people don’t realise that when they are stressed, their bodies are not getting enough supply of oxygen. Whenever things are getting too overwhelming, pause and take some deep breaths, at least five times. You will be surprised of how quickly you will feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

Listen to classical music. Many people keep classical music on the background whilst they work because it helps keep their stress levels low, and fuels their concentration. Even surgeons play classical music whilst performing surgery.

Do yoga. Yoga is an ancient mind-body exercise that combines meditation, deep breathing and stretching exercises that help you find relaxation and find balance. You can sign up for a class or if you are too busy for it, consider downloading in-home yoga tutorials.

Do some yard works. Gardening is one of the most relaxing hobbies. There’s nothing more rewarding than heading to your garden in the morning to plant flowers and work the soil. Gardening is one great, inexpensive way to reunite with nature and experience its amazing health benefits.

Hope these tips help you. Wishing you a relaxing and a less stressful day ahead!
