10 Ways to Make Your Life More Fun

Rebecca Lewis March 20, 2014

Just as play is good for children, it is also crucial for adults. Life without fun isn’t just dull. It’s downright unhealthy! Study after study shows that people who get out there and play are healthier, more productive and happier than those who are too focused on the more serious aspects of life, such as work.  They also cope better with stress, which makes them more resilient in life. The thing is that you don’t have to be a millionaire to have pure fun. Consider the following tips and suggestions to add more fun to your life:

Stop worrying about what other people would think of you.

Are you hesitant to show your dance grooves because you’re afraid of what others might think of you? Here’s what you should remember – other people don’t think about you as much as you think they do. And if they are judging you as silly, then they are those you don’t need in your life.

Give it time.

You’ve been working hard all your life. You deserve to have fun once in a while. And when that moment comes, make sure to savour every moment. When you give time for leisure, stop thinking about your worries, problems and responsibilities you need to fulfil. All these things only make you anxious. And when you are anxious, you are less likely to enjoy the moment.

It doesn’t have to be perfect or planned.

Your boss granted your request for a three-day vacation leave. So you started browsing the internet for great places to visit. You spend hours emailing and calling hotels to find which one offers the best deal and service. Then you called your friends to ask them to join you. But the preparation for that supposed to be ‘fun’ vacation seriously exhausted you that you are no longer excited. To have fun, the conditions don’t have to be perfect. Sometimes, fun moments occur when things go unexpectedly awry. Allow yourself to embrace the imperfections of the human life. That’s where fun really is.

Turn on your playlist.

Listening to music is one of the easiest ways to switch from being serious to playful. Good music can take you to a different dimension. It calms you down and relaxes your body. And that’s where fun is.

It doesn’t have to be big.

Fun doesn’t only happen in big events or gatherings. You can find it in small moments too. Fun is what you make it.

It’s not all about money.

If you think having fun is about spending lots of cash on expensive restaurants, grand vacation trips, designer clothes and bags, and the like – you’re getting it wrong. Fun is anything that connects us with our childlike energy and joy counts as fun. You don’t have to be the richest person in the world to experience fun. Just as the popular saying goes – the best things in life are free. Many times, pure fun moments are those times you spend with your kids, your spouse, your pets, and your friends.

Try something new.

It is natural to feel bored about things that once got you very excited and engaged. Well, that’s normal. It doesn’t mean you won’t experience fun moments anymore. Perhaps you can try an activity you haven’t tried before. Engage in a new hobby, grow a plant, redecorate your house, try a new dish – learning is fun!

Add jolts of fun to your daily routines.

Sometimes, the idea of trying out new things to have fun and enjoyment can create its own pressure. It is more convenient to add fun to the things you do everyday – whether it’s fixing your kid’s room, doing the office work or washing the dishes. For example, you can cuddle a cat whilst checking emails, tune in to your favourite playlist whilst doing paperwork, or if you work from home, bring your laptop somewhere else – maybe in the park to get a nice view of nature.

Go with the flow.

You know that feeling of being so engrossed in something enjoyable that you lose track of time? Psychologists call it “flow”. It is an experience so pleasant that when you’re in it, it feels like nothing else exists. Your flow could come from anything that absorbs you, like biking, baking, writing, painting, or any of your favourite hobbies.

Crack some jokes.

A lot of good and healthy things happen whenever we laugh. Our cortisol (stress hormone) levels go down, our blood pressure drops, and boost our mood and sense of well-being. People who laugh frequently have been shown to be more effective in coping with stress, more competent communicators, and less lonely.
