10 Ways to Conquer Midlife Crisis
We can describe a midlife crisis as long-term or short-term phases of psychological stresses that occur around the middle-aged years of 40-50, whilst typically diminishing our identity and self-confidence as well. But why is it, then, that many of us encounter this ‘midlife crisis’? Is it that we have our priorities wrong? What is it that’s making us feel useless and washed up by our late 30’s and early 40’s?
Below we have compiled the top 10 ways to fighting back this phenomena because really, we should be deciding how we feel!
Expand your social circle and go out more!
In a study posted online in the ‘Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health’ they found that building a social circle in your middle years is especially important to your health and even detrimental to longevity. Hard times in life can be bad enough as it is so having some good company around to help can lighten the load and peak your spirits too.
What do you really want in life?
When you had something in mind for your life, like an ultimate goal, I bet ‘midlife crisis’ wasn’t on the list (unless for a joke). If you make a list of all the things you want to do and share them with friends and family, you may stumble upon what you really want to do with your life.
Don’t cheat on your partner
A lot of stress and problems can be caused by getting confused about your marriage or long-term relationship and ending it drastically or worse, having an affair. It’s not uncommon to want to flirt with someone who is perhaps younger and attractive at work or ‘escape’ and be free but they are short-term releases and after it you’ll be feeling empty and alone with your life’s relationship in ruins.
Cut down on expensive ‘midlife gadgets’
Will a sports bike make you feel better? Probably! But expensive materialistic possessions are just an escape from the truth about how you feel. You’re looking for excitement and that spark to return to your life again. Try doing your food shopping on a Saturday afternoon, not only is it cheaper but far more dangerous and thrilling!
Do not assume every cough is worse than it is
There is such thing as over-thinking your symptoms. With all the awareness going out about diseases and infections, it can be easy to become paranoid and suspect you have it all. Relax. Keep up with your regular check-ups and stop cross-checking your symptoms and problems online!
Discover new activities and hobbies
Waking up and repeating the same things over and over again can be soul destroying and even emotionally draining. Don’t do it. Spice up your routine and lifestyle by fitting in some new activities or hobbies in your spare time. Check out local golf or archery clubs for instance or go on a random coach trip to somewhere new just for the sake of it!
Change what’s not working
Don’t waste time, money and stress committing yourself to a cause, project or endeavour which just isn’t working out for you. If it’s not an absolute essential or life and death situation then put aside and move on. You’ll get more benefits from not doing it than from actually persevering it. And it’s stressful, things like this which do not promote longevity.
Trust in what you can do!
Open up your personal dictionary and take out words like ‘can’t’. They have no place in your life. Why should they? Everything can seem difficult and almost impossible, even on a regular basis. But there’s always another side to the obstacle and if you stop and give up you’ll always be stuck on the other side. You can do it!
Look after your body!
Go on. It’s only a little bit. I’ll burn it off running upstairs. Don’t do it! Of course a treat is ok once in a while but make sure to keep your body in tip top condition to even stand a chance against those emotional terrors. It’s just a case of sleeping well, watching the drink and getting in some veggies.
